First class:
Index Cards with Partners:
1. What is the Purpose of Education?
(1a. What kinds of things should we be teaching)?
2. Purpose of music education?
(2a. How does this match up with your purpose of education)?
Thinking about the words we use and the assumptions that can be (are) made:
Gaby led us in a body percussion engagement and then we moved intro groups for group compositions based on forms representing 5 sections.

Third Week of class. We all read:
Hourigan, R. M. (2009). The invisible student: Understanding social identity construction within performing ensembles. Music Educators Journal, 34-38.
Series, D. Think Everything’s “Normal?” Then It’s Time To Reconsider And Promote A New Narrative Of Disability. Retrieved from http://organizingchange.org/think-everythings-normal-then-its-time-to-reconsider-and-promote-a-new-narrative-of-disability/
Gaby then led us in a very powerful discussion interrogating "normal":
Think through a time you wanted to be normal?
Who decided what was normal?
Do we sometimes yearn to be “normal” and why would this be so?
WHO perpetuates normalcy and to what and for what gain?
And, of course, this led to a discussion addressing epistemology (of course!)
Well thought through!

Invited the Second years to join class today! Building and continuing community among music education students. We grappled with what it means to listen - the purpose of listening, the why of listening. Then we broke into groups and experimented with Paul Fleischman's Joyful Noise: Poems for Two Voices - (check out the videos). Great fun and great joy!
